Above the Storm

Tune-up

About 2 years ago, Justis and I had a conversation about how to start a band. My advice (which I rarely take myself) was to start deciding on a name, producing a website, writing songs and recording whatever elements he could himself. If you build it, they will come. There is so much work to be done, that if you can start to do that work before you find the right people (which is the hard part) you’re that much further ahead.

He took my advice, and on Saturday, April 21st, his band Above the Storm played their first show. It’s been a long time coming, and after extensive writing, auditions and practice, they presented their best to a crowd of 60+ close friends and family at a backyard show.

The five piece consists of Justis on rhythm guitar, Adam on lead guitar, Devon on bass and death-growls, Travis on lead vocals, & Jeff on Drums. Combining death-metal vocal styling with impassioned screams, blackened tremolo-picking with thrash chugging, and technical drumming to pull it all together with finesse, this is a band that will be producing some intense, intricate, epic metal for Santa Cruz to enjoy.

I asked Justis what his influences were. Here’s what he had to say:

“My personal influences are rooted in the 90s Scandinavian melodeath sound: Amorphis, At the Gates, Dissection, Amon Amarth. I also really like alot of the modern American metal scene because the music is similiar (melodic, dynamic tempo changes) but they are more relatable because they sing about spirituality, struggles, and political concepts. Guys like As I Lay Dying, Oh, Sleeper, August Burns Red.

Some of the guys share the same exact taste as myself, but as a group, they are much more eclectic in their heavy music taste than I am.”

That ectlecticism is something that was on display Saturday night. Above the Storm have a unique sound, and it’s a sound that I look forward to seeing develop in the near future.
